UbuCon Asia 2026 @ COSCUP: Organizing, Speaking, and Learning in Taipei

Sailesh Singh tells us of the experience for the preparation: meetings and roles of organizers, and his roles as a moderator and speaker in participating in UbuCon Asia 2026. Mention is made of experiences in the 2025 event, before giving details of what was done in the lead up to UbuCon Asia 2026, through to event report for the actual event itself. A number of photos are included, including individual photos of the global and some local organizers. LightDM 1.33.1 release + apologies

Joshua Peisach announces the release of LightDM 1.33.1, telling us it fixes a bug that broke user switching and restoring from locked sessions. We’re told what happened with this bug including some history of the code, and Joshua proffers a sincere apology for not discovering the bug before LightDM 1.33 was released. Workshop 0.9.5 has been released

Dmitry Lyfar informs us that Workshop 0.9.5 has been released and gives us the release notes. Included are a list of changes, SDKcraft notes & Reference SDKs, and mention of docs with links for more extensive details.

Investing in automated C to Rust translation

Jon Seager reminds us of the role of Rust in Ubuntu’s future, and in this post tries to address the “enormous amount of mature C code”. We’re told of a new research partnership between Canonical and the University of Bristol (UK) which will result in a 3-year PhD project which has a goal of “an end-to-end platform capable of translating repositories comprising hundreds of thousands of lines of C to safe, behaviourally correct and maintainable Rust”. We’re told work is to start later this year.
